Boasting everything from beautiful beaches and barrier islands to incredible colonial cities, historic sights and coastal resorts, South Carolina really does have it all. While most visitors head straight to its scenic and serene coastline, the interior has just as much to offer with lots of lively college towns and pristine nature spots to be found amidst its rolling mountains and forests.
Set in the Deep South of the States, South Carolina lies alongside the Atlantic Ocean and is tucked away between North Carolina and Georgia. While beaches, bays, and barrier islands line the shore, as do some salt marshes and estuaries, both the Blue Ridge Mountains and Piedmont Plateau dominate and define the northwestern third of the Palmetto State.
Amidst the latter you can find the fun and festive college towns of Clemson and Spartanburg to stop by as well as Greenville – a foodie haven where the Old and New South are often said to mix. Aside from enjoying some Southern hospitality and hiking and biking along its delightful trails, Columbia, the state capital, is also well worth visiting for its attractive architecture and stupendous Statehouse.
The main place to head, however, is of course the glittering coast as it is home to not just Charleston, Georgetown, and Beaufort, but Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island, too. While the historic ports are packed with amazing antebellum architecture, interesting museum houses, and quaint cobbled streets with atmospheric old plantations lying nearby, the latter are instead perfect for rest and relaxation.
At both Myrtle Beach and Hilton Head Island visitors can stay in luxury resorts, lie upon the beach, enjoy some brilliant golf, enjoy entertainment, and participate in watersports with divine views out over the Atlantic on show before them.
