The capital of Saxony, Dresden is a historic gem of a German city. You wouldn’t believe it from looking at it today, but many of Dresden’s historic buildings were lost during bombing raids in World War II. In fact, around 90% of the city center was destroyed. Today, it’s been rebuilt and looks as good as it ever did; incredible Baroque buildings have been restored to their former glory, and old streets reconstructed anew.
Thanks to the history of Dresden, stretching back many multiple centuries, many of its hotels are housed in former palaces and heritage townhouses. Some come with fittings and fixtures – and service – to match. But there are affordable places too; places that are more modern and trendy, reflecting the Dresden of today as a center of high-tech industry in Germany.
8. The Westin Bellevue Dresden
Overlooking the Elbe river, the Westin Bellevue Dresden is all about elegance. Set in a historic manor house, the rooms here are decidedly upscale and decorated in a classic way that reflects the heritage of the building itself.
Guests can tuck into Mediterranean cuisine, sip a coffee, or enjoy a refreshing beer in the riverside beer garden. It’s just over a ten-minute walk from this hotel to a number of top attractions that Dresden has to offer, including the Semperoper Opera House and Dresden Castle – not to mention the Dresden-Neustadt train station.
7. Maritim Hotel Dresden
The rooms at this 4-star hotel come in a range of different styles and prices, from modest to upscale and well decked out, meaning it’s suitable for a variety of people, too. Practically in the heart of the city center, you’ll be within easy walking distance of Dresden’s famous Old Town if you choose to stay here.
Back at the spacious hotel, there’s a whole lot of amenities to keep you busy away from all that sightseeing, including a swimming pool and a sauna. Guests can dine on regional German cuisine or international dishes at the conservatory restaurant, overlooking the Elbe.
6. Amedia Plaza Dresden
This is definitely the place to stay in Dresden if a slice of history is what you’re after. Simply check in to the Amedia Plaza Dresden and be surrounded by all the Baroque buildings that the Innere Altstadt (the inner Old Town) has to offer.
There’s sightseeing, sure – with the 1500s era palace of Residenzschloss, amongst others – but there’s also convenience; the Dresden Mitte train station is just a two minute walk away. When it comes to the hotel itself, expect funky common areas, a comprehensive breakfast buffet, and simple, unfussy but modern rooms – all set within a historic building.
5. Star Inn Hotel Premium Dresden
Located in Altmarkt, smack bang in the center of Dresden, you’ll be well placed for exploring what the city has to offer when you stay at this hotel. Getting around is easy thanks to the nearby Altmarkt rail station, which is a mere two-minute stroll from Star Inn.
Not that you’ll need that convenience; many of Dresden’s top sights are a hop, skip and a jump away from here. The imposing Dresden Frauenkirche – built in the 1700s – and Semperoper Opera House are a short walk away. The Star Inn Hotel itself might be simple and stripped back, but it’s modern, clean, and provides a good buffet breakfast to fuel your city treks.
4. Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski
Luxury is the name of the game at Hotel Taschenbergpalais Kempinski. This place is housed in a former royal palace, which dates back to the 18th century. Needless to say, the elegance and opulence shine through at this hotel, with plush rooms as well as suites that boast marble and granite bathrooms and posh living areas.
Food options here range from a glass-and-steel ultra-modern restaurant to a cozy, oak-paneled bar effusing old world charm. Sights like the Frauenkirche and the beautiful museum complex at the centuries-old Zwinger palace are easily walkable from this hotel, too.
3. Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe
The location of the Steigenberger Hotel de Saxe is pretty fantastic, we have to admit. It is right next door to the Frauenkirche and has other historical icons of the city – like Zwinger and Semperoper – within a 10-minute walk.
The hotel itself is quite a spectacle, too. It’s set in a refined, historic building and boasts 185 rooms, making it feel very much like a classic city hotel. Plenty of old world taste is employed in making the hotel feel classy. The rooms here are elegant, as is the dining, with fine options on offer from the restaurant, as well as the chilled lobby bar.
2. IntercityHotel Dresden
When it comes to convenient location, you don’t get much better than being situated right opposite a major train station; that’s just one of the great things about IntercityHotel Dresden – Dresden Central Station is a stone’s throw from the hotel.
All the museums and stately beauty of Zwinger is a leisurely stroll from here, too. It may not be luxurious, but there’s delicious international food on offer at the restaurant and cocktails mixed up in the bar. The rooms are sleek, unfussy, and modern – perfect for those who prefer a comfortable stay – and a good base for transport in Dresden.
1. Hyperion Hotel Dresden Am Schloss
The amenities here certainly make it an attractive option for a place to stay in Dresden. There are two bars, a rooftop terrace, a meeting room, and even a playroom – making it a good option for families with younger children in tow. Not only that, but there’s a spa and fitness center set in a medieval era cellar, too!
Choose to dine in the hotel restaurant, offering up German and Swiss cuisine, or venture out to find something nearby – there’s plenty on offer. For extra points, the Hyperion Hotel is practically equidistant between amazing sights and historic areas of the city, like the Old Town, Innere Aldstadt, Zwinger and the Semperoper.
